Following a substantial campaign from the community, we are delighted that Newcastle Borough Council (NulBC) has backed plans to see the refurbishment of Kidsgrove Sports Centre to be completed.
Council Leader Simon Tagg had committed £6million from Newcastle Borough Council previously; however, the final cost of the centre was projected to be £7.5million. This led to a shortfall, in which funding from the Kidsgrove Town Deal was to prove critical. A substantial amount of work was undertaken by NulBC, ourselves, Kidsgrove Town Deal Board, and local MP Jonathan Gullis to ensure that this funding was quickly ensured to enable the refurbishment of the centre to commence.
We were delighted to welcome the Local Government secretary to visit the renovation work on Kidsgrove Sports Centre, to see first-hand the impact that the Town Deal funding will have on the community of Kidsgrove.
It was exceptionally pleasing to read that the Government agrees that the charitable community ownership model, we have long proposed in Kidsgrove is one that should be replicated elsewhere to retain vital community facilities which otherwise would face closure.
We can’t wait to reopen Kidsgrove Sports Centre and provide affordable community leisure facilities which are truly owned and accessible to everyone within our community.
The centre is currently scheduled to reopen in Spring 2022.
