When Willow started her swimming lessons at Kidsgrove Sports Centre in 2022, she was just five years old.

Fast forward to today, now aged nine, she’s still enjoying her weekly lessons and has reached Stage 7. This is a fantastic achievement that reflects just how much her swimming ability and confidence have developed.

Throughout her journey, Willow has mainly been taught by Nicola, with Julia also teaching her during some of her earlier stages. Her family has loved watching her become increasingly confident in the water and develop a genuine love for swimming.

Willow’s enjoyment of the water isn’t limited to her weekly lessons. She loves swimming at weekends, too.

And a family holiday this summer provided the perfect opportunity for her to make the most of her time in the pool. Indeed, Willow was rarely out of the water, and loved to dive, jump in, swim, snorkel and fetch things from the bottom of the pool. She even enjoyed practising her rolls in the water.

For Willow’s family, seeing just how comfortable and confident she has become in the water is something they are incredibly proud of.

Learning with Nicola

A big part of Willow’s swimming journey has been the support and encouragement she’s received from Nicola.

Willow’s Mum, Georgina, describes Nicola as a really lovely teacher who gives clear instructions, is incredibly patient and has a calm manner with the children in her lessons.

She also knows how to keep the children engaged, and makes each lesson fun. At the same time, they learn the skills they need to progress through the stages.

That approach has helped Willow enjoy her lessons and continue to develop her skills and confidence.

Willow’s words
swim lesson success stories

During their family holiday this summer, Willow was rarely out of the water.

When Willow was asked what she thinks about her swimming lessons, here’s what she said:

“Swimming lessons are good. My ability and confidence has grown. I am proud of my dive.

I think my swimming teacher is lovely and she explains things over and over again if you don’t get it. It has been very good and fun.

I’m in my last stage now and I’m glad when I pass so I can swim in the sea and other pools on my free days.

I love diving and doing the warm ups.”

Four years of making waves

From a five-year-old starting swim lessons to a confident nine-year-old on Stage 7, Willow’s come a long way.

Her story is a lovely example of what can happen when a child enjoys being in the water and has the opportunity to keep develop their skills over time.

Most importantly, Willow has developed a genuine love for swimming. And with her final stage ahead of her, Willow’s swimming journey certainly isn’t over yet.
