My journey

My journey began after I suffered from sepsis, which left me unable to use my legs. It was a long road to recovery, and I had to learn to walk again—starting by making my way from one street lamp to the next. Step by step, and day by day, I went further and further.

At the time, I relied on a walking stick, but I knew I needed to exercise my whole body. That’s when I came to Kidsgrove Sports Centre and started swimming.

From the very beginning, the staff were incredibly kind and supportive. As I was still unsteady on my feet, I used my stick to get to the poolside and relied on the Poolpod™ to help me safely in and out of the water.

Building strength and confidence

It was challenging at first. I managed just two lengths on my first visit and then needed to rest for the remainder of the day.

But slowly, I began to build up my strength and stamina. I started by attending twice a week, gradually increasing both my confidence and the number of lengths I could swim.

Where I am today

Today, I visit four or five times a week. I no longer need a walking stick and can access the pool using the steps. I’ve progressed from the slow lane to the medium lane—something I’m really proud of.

Along the way, I’ve also met some wonderful people. And that’s made the journey even more rewarding.
