My 12-month gym journey: losing 4 stone and finding my strength
Just over a year ago, I decided it was time to make a change. Walking into the gym for the first time felt a bit intimidating, but I knew that if I wanted to improve my health and fitness, I had to start somewhere.
Fast forward more than 12 months, and I’m proud to say I’ve lost 4 stone. But the journey has given me much more than just weight loss.
Taking the first step
When I first joined, everything felt new—the machines, the classes, the routine—it was all a little overwhelming. But I reminded myself that every journey starts with a single step. I kept showing up, doing what I could, and slowly built my confidence.
Finding activities I enjoy
One thing that really helped me stay consistent was mixing up my workouts. I started doing swimming, gym sessions, and classes, which kept things interesting and helped me work on different areas of fitness.
Swimming became a great way to build fitness while also giving me time to relax and reset. The gym sessions helped me get stronger and improve my stamina. The classes were always motivating, with great energy and people all working toward their own goals.
Discovering my favourite activity: running
Along the way, I discovered something I didn’t expect to love so much—running quickly became my favourite way to train. What started as short runs that felt incredibly challenging slowly became something I looked forward to.
My biggest achievement so far has been completing a 5K run. A year ago, that would have felt impossible. Crossing the finish line was an incredible moment and a reminder of how far I’ve come.
I set myself a challenge of taking part in an organised run once a month, and so far, I’ve managed it—which I’m super proud of.

A passion she didn’t know she had: Rebecca’s newfound love of running has led her to complete 5K runs and plan many more.
The supportive environment
A huge part of why I’ve stayed consistent for over a year is the friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere at the gym.
From day one, everyone has been supportive and encouraging. Whether it’s a bit of advice, motivation during a class, or just a friendly greeting, it makes a real difference.
Feeling comfortable and supported in that environment has helped me build the confidence to keep pushing myself.
The results after 12 months
After more than a year of sticking with it, the results are something I’m really proud of:
- The weight loss
- Completing my first 5K run
- Improved fitness and stamina
- More confidence and energy
- A healthier and more active lifestyle
Looking ahead
This journey has shown me that change doesn’t happen overnight, but with consistency and the right environment, it’s absolutely possible.
What started as a goal to lose weight has turned into something much bigger—a lifestyle change that has improved both my physical and mental wellbeing.
And the journey isn’t over yet.
In fact, I’ve just completed my second 5K and have many more runs booked.
So, from me to all the staff and gym members, thank you.
